Private S. Caughey
The background of this man is not known at present.
The only certain record of his service was on 9 May 1918 at Enniskillen, when as a private in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron, he faced a court martial for insubordination and disobedience to a sergeant. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour – subsequently remitted to three months' detention.
There is also a record, however, of an S. Caughey, No.21325, of the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays), being admitted into the No.31 Casualty Clearing Station on 29 September 1919.
That regimental number strongly suggests that this is the same man. It would mean that he enlisted in the Inniskillings in the early months of 1917, training at the squadron's reserve base at Enniskillen. At some point following his period of detention he would have been attached to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, serving overseas after the armistice in the Eastern Mediterranean.
