Private James Williams McCormick

This man was probably the James Williams McCormick born on 24 September 1889 at Coolnacrunaght, Castlederg, County Tyrone, the first of twelve children of farmer Colhoun McCormick and his wife Sarah (née Hamilton). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Binnawooda, Clare, County Tyrone, with his parents and seven of his nine surviving siblings, and working on the family farm.

McCormick enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron on 6 January 1917 (No. UD/314 – later Corps of Dragoons No.21294). In 1917 or 1918 he embarked for France, although it is not clear to which regiment he was posted – records suggest three possibilities, the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, 6th Dragoon Guards and King Edward's Horse.

At some point he returned to the UK, where he was posted to the 4th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry at Aldershot. On 11 February 1919 he was discharged, being 'no longer physically fit for war service' (paragraph 392(xvi), King's Regulations).

McCormick emigrated to the United States in 1920, settling in Nebraska then Missouri.
