Private Joseph Patterson

Joseph Patterson was born on 2 December 1890 at Low Road, Lisburn, County Antrim, the third of ten children of hackle-setter Thomas James Patterson and his wife Mary Ellen (née Coates). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Magheralave, Lisburn, with his parents and eight of his siblings, and working in a mill. The family later lived at 32 Llewellyn Avenue, off the Belfast Road.

Patterson enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron on 26 October 1914 (No. UD/64). On 6 October 1915 he embarked for France with his squadron, which was then serving as divisional cavalry to the 36th (Ulster) Division.

In June 1916 the Inniskilling squadron joined with C and F Squadrons of the North Irish Horse to form the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to X Corps. In August-September 1917 the Regiment was disbanded and its men, following training at the 36th (Ulster) Division Infantry Base Depot at Harfleur, were transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers, an infantry regiment. Most, including Patterson, were transferred on 20 September and posted to the 9th (Service) Battalion – renamed the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion – joining it in the field at Ruyaulcourt. Patterson was issued regimental number 41134 and was posted to A Company.

In mid-October 1917, however, Patterson suffered a fracture to his right leg and contusion to his knee. Evacuated to the UK for treatment, it appears that the injury prevented him from any further front-line service. On 17 January 1919 he was discharged, being 'surplus to military requirements, having suffered impairment since entry into the service' (paragraph 392(xvi)(a), King's Regulations).

By 1947 Patterson was living at 41 Antrim Road, Lisburn. He died in the Lisburn District Hispital on 13 April 1947 and was buried in the Lisburn Cemetery.

At least one of Patterson's brothers, Robert Patterson, also served in the war, in the North Irish Horse and 9th (NIH) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
