The War Office Daily Casualty List
Throughout the war the War Office produced a daily list of casualties of British and Commonwealth forces, provided to the press for publication.
It included not just those killed, but the wounded, shell-shocked, missing and captured.
The records do not state the date the casualty took place, but typically appeared about two months after it occurred. They show surname and initials, rank, regimental number, regiment, location of next of kin, and type of casualty.
From August 1917 these records were consolidated into weekly lists published by His Majesty's Stationery Office. The final daily list was published on 28 February 1919. Some, but not all, are available online. I have, however, been able to locate and copy every list.
Shown below are the men of the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron who became casualties while serving with that squadron, or while serving with the 9th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers (transferred September-October 1917), or the Tank Corps (transferred December 1917). Officer casualties are not shown.
