Cap badge, Royal Irish Fusiliers

Shown here is a cap badge of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, as worn by the men of the North Irish Horse 2nd Regiment after they were dismounted and absorbed into the RIF 9th Battalion. Cap badges were a popular item for collectors and souvenir hunters. As early as August 1914 one writer noted with annoyance the "petty pilfering of our cap-badges, buttons, and numerals" by French civilians at Rouen (Lucy, There's a Devil in the Drum, p.84).
