Trench art

A cartridge case from an 8mm French Lebel round (50mm tall), decorated with a small North Irish Horse button. It belonged to Private William H (Bilshey) Howe, North Irish Horse (2092) and Royal Irish Fusiliers (41419). His older brother, James (Jimmy) Howe, also served in the North Irish Horse and Royal Irish Fusiliers. William and James lived in Belturbet, County Cavan, having moved there from Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh. They lived in the gatehouse of the local Church of Ireland rectory, now demolished. Bilshey is said to have suffered from 'shell-shock'.
