Private George Moorhead Shannon


Private George Moorhead Shannon, of 37 Pretoria Street, Belfast, NIH Service No.1734. Born in Belfast, the son of Francis and Rebecca Shannon. He enlisted at Antrim on 29 September 1915 and embarked for France on 27 July 1916. He was then posted to E Squadron, 1st Regiment NIH, VII Corps. On 20 September he was transferred to the 9th (North Irish Horse) Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers (No.41428) and posted to C Company. Shannon was killed in action on 25 October 1918, aged 25. He is buried at Harlebeke New British Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, grave VI.B.13. The gravestone inscription reads:

G. M. SHANNON
ROYAL IRISH FUSILIERS
25TH OCTOBER 1918 AGE 25
DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP
IN VICTORY
Due to an administrative error, Private Shannon's parents were not formally notified of his death until June 1920.
