Lieutenant William Shields

Lieutenant William Shields, 45th Squadron Royal Flying Corps, formerly a Lieutenant in the 14th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, and a Private in the North Irish Horse (Service No. 1450). Son of Samuel and Sarah Shields of 33 Upper Frank Street, Belfast. Killed in action on 5 September 1917, aged 28. Buried at Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, grave I.H.41. The gravestone inscription reads:

LIEUTENANT

WILLIAM SHIELDS

MANCHESTER REGIMENT

AND ROYAL FLYING CORPS

5TH SEPTEMBER 1917 AGE 28

UNTIL THE DAY BREAK

AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY
