Lance Corporal Adam Armstrong

Adam Armstrong was born on 11 August 1892 at Ballynagilly, Omagh, County Tyrone, the fifth of seven children of farmer Joseph Armstrong and his wife Elizabeth (née Rutledge). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Main Street, Fintona, County Tyrone at the home of grocer and provision merchant William Guy, where he worked as an apprentice.

Armstrong enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 2 and 6 December 1915 (No.2015 – later Corps of Hussars No.71672). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in the last months of 1916. There he was posted to B or C Squadron of the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment, which at the time was serving as corps cavalry to X Corps.

On 13 May 1917, however, Armstrong was hospitalised, suffering from an abscess on his thigh. Three weeks later he was evacuated to the UK. It appears that the wound did not heal sufficiently, and in March 1918 he was transferred to the Military Foot Police (No. P/14642), remaining on home duty for the duration of the war.

Armstrong was demobilised or discharged on 23 September 1919. He emigrated to Canada in September 1920.
