The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present.

Armstrong enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 13 and 22 January 1913 (No.784). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

On 7 March 1917 he transferred to the Military Mounted Police (No. P/8590), remaining with that regiment until the end of the war.
