Private William Joseph Armstrong

The background of this North Irish Horseman is unknown at present, but it is possible he was the William Armstrong listed in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Roll of Honour as coming from Dungleady, Culnady Congregation, County Londonderry.

Armstrong enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 24 January and 16 February 1912 (No.662 – later Corps of Hussars No.71061). He embarked for France with C Squadron on 20 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

On 17 September 1917 Armstrong deserted, though whether he was in France or Ireland at the time is not known.
