Private David Baird

 

David Baird was born on 15 March 1888 at Race End, Letterkenny, County Donegal, the fifth of six children of farmer David Baird and his wife Margaret Anne (nee Stewart). By 1911 he was living at Race End with his parents and three of his siblings and working on the family farm.

Baird enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 12 October and 12 November 1909 (No.415 – later Corps of Hussars No.71024). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

At some point during the war he was wounded, though the date and circumstances are not presently known.

He was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, 28 April 1919.

On 14 May 1920 he sailed from Liverpool for Canada, intending to settle as a farmer in Manitoba.
