Private Hubert Fisher Blair

 

Hubert Fisher Blair was born on 16 July 1884 at Letterkenny, County Donegal, one of at least six children of clothier or merchant tailor James Blair and his wife Martha (née McBirnie). During the 1890s the family moved to Scotland and by the time of the 1901 Census were living at 17 Highburgh Road, Glasgow, Hubert working as an ironmonger's apprentice. On 2 June 1910 he married Helen Dalziel Innes in St Michael and All Angels Church, Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. At the time of the 1911 Census they were living at 319 Holmlea Road, Glasgow, with their first child, Hubert working as a leather goods warehouse assistant.

Blair enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 7 and 28 June 1916 (regimental number between 2193 and 2205 – later Corps of Hussars No.71712). In January 1918 he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen from the regiment's Antrim reserve camp. There he was attached to the 1/1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers). At the beginning of July 1918 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) (No.169462).

Blair was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 7 December 1919. After the war he returned to Scotland. He died at Castlemilk Road, Croftfoot, Glasgow, on 9 December 1957.
