Private Josies Burgess

 

Josies (or Josias) Burgess was born on 16 August 1891 at Ullinagh, Castleblayney, County Monaghan, the eighth of eleven children of farmer John Dunlop Burgess and his wife Susanna (nee Phillips).

Burgess enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 14 and 31 March 1914 (No.931 – later Corps of Hussars No.71167). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons and advance to the Aisne.

Burgess remained with the regiment throughout the war. On 31 March 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

On 18 May 1921 he sailed from Liverpool for New York on board the White Star liner Celtic.
