Private Thomas Burke

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, but he was probably from Scotland.

Thomas Burke initially served as a gunner in the Highland (Fifeshire) Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery (No.760). On 3 May 1915 he embarked for France with his unit, which at the time was attached to the 51st (Highland) Division.

Between 29 January and 12 April 1917 he was transferred to the North Irish Horse (regimental number between 2395 and 2398, 2400 or 2401 – later Corps of Hussars No.71802).

In January 1918 he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen from the regimental reserve depot at Antrim. There he was attached to the 1/1st Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment), serving with that regiment in the Palestine campaign.

On 27 June 1919 Burke was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
