Private Frederick Butler

The background of this man is not known at present.

Frederick Butler enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Antrim on 8 August 1917 (regimental number between 2651 and 2653 – later Corps of Hussars No.71940). He was described as being 5' 7" tall with a fresh complexion, fair hair and grey eyes. He stated that he was aged 18 or 19, was born at Richmond, Surrey, and was employed as a butcher.

Enlisting at the same time was Harry Butler, probably Frederick's older brother (or perhaps his cousin).

Having trained at the regiment's reserve camp at Antrim, he embarked for France in late 1917 or early 1918. He must have returned to the UK, perhaps due to illness or injury, for he was reported to have deserted from Antrim on 3 April 1918. His brother Harry deserted on the same day.

It appears unlikely that he was apprehended, for his medals were withheld as a result of his desertion.
