Lieutenant Maxwell Stuart Close

Maxwell Stuart Close was born on 1 February 1892 at Drumbanagher, Poyntzpass, Co. Armagh, son of Maxwell Archibald Close, Major in the 13th Hussars, and his wife Muriel Albany Close (nee Stuart-Richardson).

He attended Sandhurst as a 'gentleman cadet' before being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the North Irish Horse on 4 December 1912.

On the outbreak of war he transferred to the 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars. On 29 October 1914 he was promoted to temporary lieutenant, and made a full lieutenant on 17 December.

He embarked for France on 10 July 1915 and, it appears, served throughout the war in the 4th Hussars Reserve Regiment.
