Private Simon Henry Cartwright

Simon Henry Cartwright was born on 18 August 1889 at Kiltrasna, County Cavan, the third of five children of farmer William Cartwright and his wife Eliza (née Johnstone). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Kiltrasna with his parents and one of his two surviving siblings, and working as a tramways conductor. On 26 February 1912 he married Dorcas Cox in the Arvagh Church of Ireland Parish Church.

Cartwright enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 29 January and 12 April 1917 (regimental number between 2390 and 2395 – later Corps of Hussars No.71797). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in 1917 or 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.

On 25 March 1919 Cartwright was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

At some point after the war he moved to Northern Ireland, living in Portstewart and later in Lurgan. Following the death of his wife Dorcas, on 25 October 1941 he married Agnes Baird in the Shankill Parish Church, Lurgan (see article below). He died at Lurgan on 25 September 1970.
