Private William Colhoun

The background of this man is not certain, but he may be the William Colhoun listed in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour living at Glentidaly, Ramelton, County Donegal, who served as a Private in the North Irish Horse. This man was born on 9 May 1890 at Glentidaly, the first of three children of farmer Robert Colhoun and his wife Catherine (née Black). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Glentidaly with his parents and surviving sibling, and working on the family farm.

Colhoun enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 5 and 16 May 1917 (regimental number between 2453 and 2456 – later Corps of Hussars No.71841). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp before embarking for France in 1917 or 1918. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment. This regiment served as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps from its establishment in May 1916 until February-March 1918, when it was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit, serving as corps cyclists to V Corps until the end of the war.

On 8 March 1919 Colhoun was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
