Private George Craig

George Craig was born in 1879 at Rostrevor, County Down, the son of Robert and Harriet Craig. (He may have been the child born as Joseph Craig to labourer Robert Craig and his wife Harriet (nee Roe) at Rostrevor on 18 April 1879.)

He enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Dundrum on 16 June 1909 (No.381), having earlier served four years with the 19th Middlesex Volunteers. He gave his occupation as musician.

Craig served in the regiment's A (Belfast) Squadron. He was mobilised at the beginning of the war but on 7 October 1914 was found to be suffering from amaurosis, an eye disease. Three days later he was discharged as permanently unfit for service (paragraph 154 Special Reserve Regulations).

His record of service was marked as 'very good'.
