Lance Corporal Robert James Dougall

 

Robert James Dougall was born on 3 December 1897 at Rowellan, Oldpark Road, Belfast, second of two children of commercial coal clerk William John Dougall and his wife Martha (nee Fraser).

Dougall enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Belfast on 1 September 1914 (No.1070 – later Corps of Hussars No. H/71222), aged just 16.

He embarked for France with a reinforcement draft for A and C Squadrons on 20 January 1915, being posted to the former squadron. He remained with the regiment throughout the war.

Dougall was one of eight North Irish Horsemen mentioned in Field-Marshal Haig's despatch of 16 March 1919 for "distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty" during the period 16 September 1918 to 15 March 1919.

He was transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 25 February 1919.
