Lance Corporal J. Golland
The background of this man is not known at present. Nor is it certain that he served in the North Irish Horse. However the sequence of his regimental numbers suggest that he may have served in the headquarters establishment of the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment.
J. Golland enlisted in the Dragoons of the Line in the early months of the war (No.5562). Posted to the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, he embarked for France on 14 February 1916. It appears that he was later posted to the headquarters establishment of the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment following the formation of that regiment in France from C and F Squadrons and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron. The headquarters, formed in England and comprising 40 officers and men, joined the new regiment in France at the beginning of July.
The 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment served as corps cavalry to X Corps until August-September 1917, when the regiment was disbanded and its men were transferred to the Royal Irish Fusiliers, an infantry regiment. Just prior to that, on 18 July, Golland was one of fourteen men of the regiment transferred to the Military Mounted Police (No. P/12025), with the rank of lance corporal.
Golland remained with that regiment in France and Belgium until the end of the war.
