Lieutenant John Hutton Grigg

John Grigg was a New Zealander who was studying at the University of Cambridge when the war broke out. He enlisted as a Private (No.1171) in the 2/1 Royal North Devon Hussars on 5 October 1914. He was aged 19 at the time. By February 1915 he had been promoted to Sergeant and by July was accepted to officer training at the Inns of Court OTC.
A month later he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the North Irish Horse. He embarked for France on 11 January 1916 with E Squadron. That month he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Grigg served in France with the North Irish Horse until April 1918, when he was transferred to the Royal Artillery.
After the war he returned to New Zealand.
