Private Samuel Hugh Madill
Samuel Hugh Madill was born on 5 April 1898 at Crankill, Ballymena, County Antrim, the sixth of seven children of farmer and carpenter William Bradshaw Madill and his wife Jane Martin Madill (née Wylie). His mother died when he was just three years old. By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Crankill with his father, step-mother, a brother and half-sister.
Madill enlisted in the North Irish Horse in February 1918 (regimental number unknown at present). He spent the remainder of the war in training at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim, and was demobilised in 1919.
In June 1920 he emigrated to Canada, later settling in Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 22 July 1990 at Olney, Montgomery County, Maryland, and is commemorated in the Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Saint Petersburg, Pinellas County, Florida.
His name is included on the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour, belonging to the Killymurris Congregation, Ahoghill Presbytery. The Ballymena Observer of 22 July 1921, reporting on the unveiling of a war memorial plaque in the Killymurris Presbyterian Church, includes Samuel Hugh among those named on the plaque, together with Privates W. Madill and John Madill, and Captain Johnston Madill, probably Samuel's brothers. Only Samuel, however, is included on the PCI Roll of Honour. It may be that the other three served in the United States Army.
