William James Mulholland was born on 17 May 1883 at Milltown, Ballymoney, County Antrim, the first of three children of hackler James Mulholland and his wife Jane (née McArthur). His father died when he was just six years old.

On 11 September 1909 he married nurse Winifred Mary Alice Murphy at Drumreagh Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. The couple had three children over the next four years. In mid-1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
