Private James Maxwell Stewart

 

James Maxwell Stewart was born on 2 January 1899 in Fountain Street, Antrim, the second of five children of veterinary surgeon William Stewart and his wife Jane (née Caulfield). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Fountain Street with his parents and siblings.

Stewart was employed by the Northern Bank in 1915. After working at head office in Belfast he was posted to Cushendall, County Antrim.

In 1917 he enlisted in the North Irish Horse (regimental number unknown at present). He remained with the regiment at its Antrim reserve depot for the duration of the war.

 

Stewart's younger brother John Stewart also served in the North Irish Horse during the war.
