Private James Maxwell Stewart
James Maxwell Stewart was born on 2 January 1899 in Fountain Street, Antrim, the second of five children of veterinary surgeon William Stewart and his wife Jane (née Caulfield). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Fountain Street with his parents and siblings.
His father, who died at Fountain Street on 21 November 1914, was connected to the local contingent of the North Irish Horse through his veterinary practice (see below).
Stewart was employed by the Northern Banking Company in 1915. After working at head office in Belfast he was posted to Cushendall, County Antrim.
In 1917 he enlisted in the North Irish Horse (regimental number unknown at present). He remained with the regiment at its Antrim reserve depot for the duration of the war.
Stewart later emigrated to New Zealand.
His name is included on the Northern Bank Roll of Honour. Although his name is included on the church memorial in the High Street (Second) Presbyterian Church, Antrim, it was not included on the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Roll of Honour: 1914-1919.
Stewart's younger brother John Stewart also served in the North Irish Horse during the war.
