Private Hillis Wright

Hillis Wright was born on 3 March 1893 at Craigs, Killyless, Ballymena, County Antrim, the tenth of eleven children of weaver (later road labourer) Joseph Wright and his wife Sarah Ann (née McMaster). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Killyless with his parents and three of his seven surviving siblings and working as a farm labourer.

Wright enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 1 July 1918 (No.72116). After training at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp, on 11 January 1919 he was discharged, being 'surplus to military requirements, not having suffered impairment since entry into the service' (paragraph 392 xxv(a), King's Regulations).

After the war Wright returned to Killyless, where he was employed as a textile worker. In April 1930 he emigrated to the United States. He died there on 16 March 1976 and was buried in the Saint Peter's Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
