General Service button

 

           

 

A General Service button of the type worn by the North Irish Horsemen when they became infantrymen, as shown in the photograph of the Royal Engineer above. Five large buttons and six medium-sized buttons were worn on the tunic, the latter to secure the pockets and epaulettes. Two small-sized buttons were sewn on the sides of the service dress cap to secure the chin strap.
