Horsemen who transferred to the Military Police
At least sixty-four officers and men of the North Irish Horse were transferred or posted to the Military Mounted Police and Military Foot Police.
Half of these took place on two occasions. The first was on 12 July 1915, when twenty-four North Irish Horsemen from F Squadron volunteered for service as Military Mounted Police with the 54th (East Anglian) Division, which was under orders to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. They sailed from Devonport on HMT Manitou on 29 July 1915, joining the landing at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, between 10 and 16 August. By the end of the year the campaign at Gallipoli was abandoned, the men of the North Irish Horse embarking for Alexandria, Egypt, in December. A number of them remained there for the duration of the war, serving in various elements of the Egypt and Palestine campaigns.
The second occasion was on 18 July 1917, when eight men from the 2nd North Irish Horse Regiment were transferred just prior to that regiment being disbanded.
When transferred to the Military Police, men with the rank of private were promoted to lance corporal to give them sufficient authority to give orders to other private soldiers.
