Sapper Robert William Nesbitt


Sapper Robert William Nesbitt was the son of Joseph and Charlotte Nesbitt, of 6 Athol Street, Belfast.
He first served with the Royal Engineers (Service No.201658), enlisted in the North Irish Horse in February 1916 (No.2118), and later transferred to the Waterways and Railways branch on the Royal Engineers (No. WR/260378).
Nesbitt was sent to France at some time between 1916 to 1918.
He died at home on 11 November 1919 from the effects of gas poisoning, aged 25.
He is buried at Belfast City Cemetery, grave P.136. The gravestone inscription reads:

11TH NOVEMBER 1919 AGE 25
AT THE GOING DOWN
OF THE SUN
AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
