Private Robert Ross, North Irish Horse Service No.1829 (Corps of Hussars No.71579), son of John and Elizabeth Ross of 318 Springfield Road, Belfast.  He enlisted at Antrim between 8 and 10 November 1915 and was sent to France as a reinforcement to the 1st Regiment North Irish Horse.  In March 1918 the Regiment became the V Corps Cyclist (North Irish Horse) Regiment. He was killed in action on 21 August 1918, aged 25, and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France, grave VII.F.34. The gravestone inscription reads:

21ST AUGUST 1918 AGE 25

Private Ross's body was recovered in October 1919 from a burial site south-east of Beaumont-Hamel (Beaucourt Cemetery map ref. 57.d.Q.18.b.5.6) and moved to the Ancre British Cemetery. It had been identified by a cross over the grave. (See Burial Return form below.)
